How a Chiropractor Can Help after a Bicycle Accident
5 Ways Physical Therapy Can Help You after an Accident
Accidents can happen to any of us – at any time.
An accident is frequently traumatic and stressful for a multitude of reasons. Worse yet, you may have lasting injuries that continue to cause you pain or discomfort. In some cases, they may even be debilitating.
That’s where we come in. A chiropractor trained to recognize and treat accident injuries can facilitate your road to recovery through in-clinic treatments and potentially a prescribed series of at-home exercises and lifestyle changes.
What kinds of accidents and injuries can a chiropractor help you with?
Car accidents. Car accidents are a leading cause of injuries in our country, with an estimated 1.6 million injurious accidents annually. The nature and severity of the injury depends upon the individual, as well as the nature of the accident and the type of impact suffered, but there are a few common injuries from car accidents that a chiropractor can help you recover from.
Head and back injuries – These are some of the most serious car accident injuries. Drivers and passengers may strike their heads against hard surfaces in the car in high-speed actions, leading to traumatic brain injuries. Back injuries are also common, and range in severity from fractures and herniated discs to strains and sprains.
Any suspected head or back injury should first be checked by emergency medical personnel. A chiropractor can help you recover from back injuries through both chiropractic and physical therapy.
Neck injuries – Whiplash is the one of the most common car accident injuries. It happens due to forceful back-and-forth movement of the neck, and is most common in rear-end auto accidents. Generalized neck pain is also common after an auto accident.
A chiropractor can help you recover from neck injuries through chiropractic manipulative therapy, intersegmental traction and massage therapies.
Motorcycle accidents. Even minor motorcycle accidents can result in severe injury, as motorcyclists are completely exposed during the crash. Luckily chiropractic care can help you to rehabilitate after these common injuries.
Hip/pelvic misalignment. Misalignment of the hip and pelvis is very common after motorcycle accidents, as the impact of hitting the road or another object is often absorbed by the hips and pelvis. This can cause severe back pain, and even make you unable to walk.
A chiropractor can help you recover from hip and pelvic misalignment through chiropractic manipulative therapy and at-home exercises.
Neck and back injuries. Neck and back injuries are also common in motorcycle accidents, and due to the exposed nature of the victim they are likely to be more severe than those sustained in car accidents.
However, a chiropractor can help you to recover from even severe neck and back injuries. Just be sure to have any suspected fractures checked out in an emergency room.
Biker’s arm. In a biker’s arm or rider’s arm injury, a motorcyclist instinctively draws the hand in front of his or herself to brace for impact when falling. This can lead to damage to bones, tendons, ligaments, and nerves of the wrist, arm, and shoulder.
Chiropractic can help you to rehabilitate from a biker’s arm injury through massage therapy and adjustments and exercises designed to restore your arm’s range of motion.
Slip and falls. Slip and fall injuries occur when a person trips or slips and is injured as a result of the fall. Injuries from slips and falls range from mild to severe depending upon the nature of the fall and overall health of the victim.
Sprains. The inertia of slipping and falling can cause the victim to twist a knee, ankle, or wrist. Sprains are soft tissue injuries, and occur as a result of small stretches and tears in the tendons and ligaments. Sprains are very painful, but usually heal fairly easily.
A chiropractor can help ease discomfort from sprains through hydrotherapy, and can prescribe at-home exercises to help you regain your range of motion.
Shoulder injuries. The impact to your shoulder from a fall can dislocate your shoulder or damage the tendons and ligaments. This is not only extremely painful, but can severely restrict your range of motion long-term if not treated properly.
A chiropractor can help restore your range of motion after a shoulder injury through physical therapy, at-home exercises and other chiropractic therapies.
Back injuries. Falls can damage the vertebrae of the back or cause slipped or herniated discs. These injuries are very painful and can be debilitating long-term. Soft tissue injuries to the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the back can also be very painful.
A chiropractor can evaluate the nature of your back injuries and prescribe an appropriate course of treatment, which could include massage or hydromassage therapy for soft-tissue injuries, chiropractic manipulative or traction therapy for slipped or herniated discs, and potentially at-home exercises.
