Cars, Bikes, Uneven Sidewalks – The Many Ways to Get Hurt Walking

Cars, Bikes, Uneven Sidewalks – The Many Ways to Get Hurt Walking

Walking is something pretty much all of us do every day. It allows us to get from one location to another. Plus, it’s a great form of exercise. If we were unable to walk, we’d surely feel the loss.

However, walking can potentially be a dangerous activity if you’re not paying attention. Let’s first look at the top causes of pedestrian accidents and injuries and then how you can treat those injuries with the help of chiropractor.

4 Common Causes of Pedestrian Accidents

There are a number of ways a pedestrian can get involved in an accident. Here are four of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents.

Car crashes. It probably comes as no surprise that car accidents are the number one cause of pedestrian accidents. In 2015, 5,376 pedestrians were killed in traffic collisions here in the United States and another 129,000 pedestrians were injured.

Drunk driving, speeding, and distracted driving are the top reasons a car might hit a pedestrian. A pedestrian, however, also needs to take precautions when walking on the street. Using marked crosswalks and waiting for the proper traffic signal can greatly reduce pedestrian-car collisions.

Bicycles. Bikes are responsible for their fair share of pedestrian accidents as well. A bicycle riding on the sidewalk not only can hit pedestrians, but also force pedestrians off the sidewalk and into the road where they’re vulnerable to cars.

Distracted walking. Just like distracted driving, distracted walking is a major safety concern for pedestrians. Texting and walking, talking on a cellphone, and listening to music are all examples of activities that could potentially distract a walker and cause an accident. When you’re not paying attention to what you’re doing, you could easily trip or bump into people and objects, causing injuries.

Road hazards. Whether you’re walking on a sidewalk, the street, or a designated path, there are a number of hazards that could cause an injury. Uneven sidewalks, holes, cracks, and debris can all contribute to pedestrian accidents and injuries.

Pedestrian Injuries and Chiropractic Treatment

There are dozens of injuries a pedestrian might experience if they’re involved in an accident. Depending on the type of accident and the severity, common injuries can include:

  • Cuts and bruises
  • Strains and sprains
  • Fractures and broken bones
  • Concussions
  • Head/face/neck injuries
  • Upper and lower extremity injuries
  • Pelvic injuries
  • Brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Death

If you are involved in a pedestrian accident, it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible to make sure you haven’t suffered serious damage. Regardless of how serious your injury is, though, you’ll most likely be in pain and want to not only alleviate your pain but also begin the healing process.

A chiropractor takes a holistic approach to healing by focusing on natural, nonsurgical ways to heal your body and increase your quality of life. A knowledgeable Florida chiropractor will be able to thoroughly assess your injuries and come up with a treatment plan that will provide you with the best possible results.
